The first organizational meeting was held on September 25, 1974. Three Meetings followed, during which a name was chosen, the by-laws were written, and officers were elected. Those who attended the three meetings were considered to be Charter Members. It was decided that the boat was to be considered as a member of the Yacht Club, and that women were to be considered active voting members; There was to be no auxiliary.

SIYC was chartered as a non-profit organization in February 1975.

• The first club function was Christmas Lane, a display of decorated boats moored at the Port Orchard breakwater on December 21 and 22, 1974. This display, open to the public, has been held every year since.

•Our first woman Commodore, Charlotte Mossman, was elected in 1984.
